Family Guy, Vol. 1 (Seasons 1 & 2)
At last "A MUST BUY" DVD

I have been waiting for this DVD for many, many months now, and finally after numerous petitions, it is being released. I live in New Zealand, and will be buying this for sure. I was just about to buy the UK Region 2 version Season One only, just because I love this show so much. Luckily I didn't, because the Region 1 version looks SO much better. Now I will wait for Seinfeld...

VH1 Divas Las Vegas 2002
Divas Las Vegas

When VH1 aired Divas Las Vegas, I enjoyed the performances by all the singers. Although the DVD edition cut out several songs from the video, it still captures some of the memorable performances that was aired on VH1. I have both the 98 and 99 edition of the VH1 Divas programs and this is a must have for my collection

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
We'll meet again....

This movie is absolutely brilliant emule. Its the best thing that Kubrick ever did and the best movie ever made... possibly the best movie that ever will be made. Darkly funny, it was co-written by Terry Southern if thats any indication. Not to mention a young Kubrick that would settle for nothing less than perfection, and with his razor sharp mind and eye, perfection is exactly what he got. Strangelove has absolutely wonderful acting all around, everyone is right on the mark, every scene is perfect. Sellers plays three rolls and was also suppose to play Slim Pickins roll too but he refused and rumor has it that he even broke his leg so that he wouldn't have to. the string in my is gone you see. When Kubrick made this movie he was actually very afraid himself of nuclear war and as the title suggests, he was able to get over it by making a huge joke out of it all. or at least that's what one of his biographies says. Also its interesting that Kubrick first started writing this as a serious movie and then turned it into a comedy. The year Strangelove came out another movie, Fail Safe starring Henry Fonda and VERY similar to Strangelove only serious was also released. But somehow joking about the whole thing was so much more appealing. Anyway if you haven't seen this movie you are really missing out. Buy it now because you will never get sick of it. I've seen it dozens of times and its still funny. I'll never get over Sellers bizarre character in the wheel chair with the evil hand. And the ending to this movie can not be beat. period. I wont say in case you haven't seen it, but its the best ending to a movie EVER..

The High Crusade
Excellent Comedy

When I found this movie, I was excited. I've been a serious fan of Poul Anderson's work since I started reading. "The High Crusade" has always been one of my favorite books by Anderson and I have long thought that it would make an excellent movie. I still think it would make an excellent movie. Unfortunately, this is not it.
I was completely surprised by the direction taken by the screen play and direction of this movie. Or maybe shocked would be a better word. It had simply never occurred to me that Anderson's book would be interpreted as a comedy. Certainly, there is humor in the novel, but it is basically a story of high adventure with some very serious elements balancing the humor. There is none of that in the movie. Brown the screen writer and Knoesel & Neuhauser the directors extracted elements from the book and used them as a skeleton on which to build a second rate "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
This movie was almost painful for me to watch because I could see enough of the novel on the screen to know that a good movie could have been made from "The High Crusade." The SFX, though a little cheezy by current standards, are still acceptable. The cast was adequate, though some of the parts would have been cast differently if this were not a comedy, I'm sure. Certainly, John Rys-Davies makes an excellent Brother Parvis and he is one of the few redeeming factors of this film. And the few scenes taken from the novel were almost watchable. But the overall tone and direction were not even remotely true to the novel. Frankly, even fans of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" will be disappointed because it's just not that funny.
If you have never read the book, then you may find this movie mildly amusing. If you are a fan of this classic science fiction novel, then I recommend steering clear of this movie. It will taint your good memories of the book forever.

Jam Miami - A Celebration of Latin Jazz

You MUST get this DVD.

Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)
The BEST Star Wars flick out there

This is, by far, THE BEST of all 4 Star Wars movies yet This movie was made to stand on it's own, sequels to it or not It has all of the major themes of a major epic. Darth Vader is the greatest I have watched this movie over and over and over...the special effects might look tame to today's standards, but the lack of "computer effects" gives it more a sence of realism. I LOVE THIS MOVIE

Forbidden Zone
The coolest movie you've never seen...

Once upon a time, way back in the 1970's, there was a magical land called Southern California. It was in this place that two brothers, Richard and Danny Elfman, devised an avant-garde musical comedy troupe, called The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. In 1980, they decided to form a loose story based around some of their performance pieces and make a movie. That movie is the legendary Forbidden Zone. Since my fourteen-year old vhs tape of this movie is rotting on the shelf as I write this, I couldn't be happier to see its release on dvd.
Okay, the film is a certified nut case of a movie, filmed over the course of maybe a week in and around the LA area. It's in black and white, not because of any artistic vision - it was just cheaper that way. But it works - the film is a tribute, send up of 1930's era musicals, with standout music by Josephine Baker and Cab Calloway and centers around the Hercules family and the strange portal to the 6th Dimension that exists in their basement. The world this takes place in is filled with strange imagery, amazing music, and more oddities than a sane person could hope to count. We have a human-size dancing frog, jockstrap-clad Kipper Kids, Herv Villechaize as the king of the 6th Dimension, a chicken-boy who is able to communicate telepathically with his transvestite brother, Joe Spinell as a drunker sailor, classroom violence, a Jewish wrestler fighting a guy in an ape suit, and Danny Elfman playing Satan while singing "Minnie the Moocher." You get the idea; this is not a normal film. Although it borrows from the works of Olsen & Johnson Hellzapoppin' & Crazy House, this is still a truly unique cinema experience.
The advance word from Richard Elfman is that this dvd will have a re-mastered print of the film, deleted scenes, interviews, and archival footage For any fan of Danny Elfman, Oingo Boingo, or just incredibly strange films made by talented people, you simply can't miss this one.

The Count of Monte Cristo Collection (Miniseries)
the Count

I read the Dumas books growing up and still have the paper I wrote on "The Count of Monte Cristo" from my senior year in high school. To me, Richard Chamberlain WAS the count in the 1975 TV movie. And then, in June 1999, I caught the very beginning of the remake on Bravo and was totally hooked for four nights. It was just different enough from the book that I had to see what they were going to do next. Oh, I was pathetic I even stayed up late to watch the re-broadcasts and left work early to catch them again the next afternoon. Alas, I didn't tape them the first time around and waited six LONG months for their rebroadcast. Happily, I taped all the episodes in November. Then my husband surprised me with the DVD in June of THIS year. We watched it four nights in a row, and wouldn't you know it - Bravo showed it again the week after that and I watched it non-stop like a real addict. I can almost recite dialogue from the subtitles at this point.
As you can plainly see, I am NOT the most objective reviewer here. To me, there is not another living actor anywhere in the world who brings the dedication, style, and just plain fun to the work as Gerard Depardieu. This is the first time I'd ever seen anything he's acted in, so when I first saw him in this, I thought - no way. He's wrong physically for the role. Maybe in the beginning during the prison scenes that's true - but once he's out of prison and ready to take on Europe - watch out He can be sexy, disgusting, evil, soft-hearted, or whatever the part and the moment require. The cast around him is marvelous as well. Florence Darel is terrific as the country widow who isn't nearly as naive as she seems, and Ornella Muti sizzles throughout. Whether she's dressed up in Paris or letting down her hair in Marseilles, she's beautiful. The movie has the look and feel of artwork come to life. It was as much a feast for the eyes as the French language is for the ears. And by the way. . .I'm glad they went with subtitles rather than dubbing. When you've watched the movie as much as I have, you can just listen to it and revel in the beauty because you already know the plot. Speaking of which. . .
The changes from the book didn't bother me at all. Most screenwriters do take liberties in transposing works to movies think of Gone with the Wind I know that several other reviewers hated that the ending was dramatically different from what Dumas wrote and probably not at all what real-life characters would have done in that situation. But as for me, I was - and still am - totally swept away by the grandeur and beauty of this production. It's made me a fan of Gerard Depardieu and also more willing to take a chance on watching foreign films with subtitles, literally opening up a whole new world of entertainment. This production would make a great activity for a literature or French course in high school or college, too.
Catch it on Bravo or rent it if you're intimidated by the price of either the VHS or DVD versions. Or better yet, you can borrow my tapes where I recorded it last year. But not the DVD. It never leaves my house. No sirree:
